What is a well woman exam?

The annual well woman exam is the foundation of preventive care in gynecology. During your visit, we cover many important parts of your health, in one focused appointment.

Cancer screenings

Annual exams are when you'll undergo routine screenings for breast and cervical cancer. You may also have a colon cancer screening.

General health

Depending on your age and history, your visit may include screenings for high blood pressure, diabetes, bone density, or osteoporosis, among other things.

Vaccinations

If applicable, you may receive your annual flu shot or HPV vaccination.

Menstrual cycle concerns

Your annual exam is an ideal time to discuss menstrual cycle abnormalities, including heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, or irregular periods.

Concerns about sex

If you have any concerns about sex, including questions about painful intercourse, libido problems, or hormonal changes, you can address them here.

STI screening

You can request sexually transmitted infection screenings, including tests for chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, or other infections spread through sexual contact.

Weight and lifestyle

We can also help you understand how to better manage your weight through physical activity and nutrition.

Common questions

A pap test is usually part of a routine pelvic exam, and is generally recommended every three years for women between the ages of 21 and 65. Starting at age 30, your doctor may recommend continuing a pap test every three years, or pairing it with an HPV screening every five years. Higher risk patients may need them more often.
A mammogram is a special type of X-ray used to detect breast cancer in women who do not otherwise have symptoms. Most women should start having annual mammograms at the age of 40.
Most annual exams take about 30 to 45 minutes. We always make time for your questions and never rush.
Your insurance card, photo ID, a list of medications, and details about your last period. If you have prior records, bring them or ask your previous office to send them ahead.
